About the Sutherland Shire Orchid Society Inc.
In 1952 a number of local orchid growing enthusiasts came together to form the Sutherland Shire Orchid Society. The Society's members soon became known for growing a large range of high quality exotic species and complex hybrids, but it was in the area of Australian Native orchids that it became especially noted. It is still highly regarded for its members' expertise with native orchids to this day.
The Society was known for its excellent display work in large shows and S.S.O.S shows led the way with small top displays. The Society also gained a reputation for its high quality benching at the monthly meetings.
Back in the early 1970's the then President Bert Cardwell started classes for members who wished to become orchid show judges. This was originally begun to get "in house" judges for our monthly meetings. Members who successfully completed the A.O.C (Australian Orchid Council) Judges course were then able to judge at S.S.O.S meetings. Many went on to do further full course and become A.O.C/NSW Judges.
The Society holds its meetings on the 2nd Monday evening of each month at the Auditorium of the Sutherland Uniting Church, Cnr Flora Merton Streets, Sutherland. There is usually a Novice Class, lasting for approximately half an hour before the main meeting on most evenings. Experienced growers give advice and tips to newer growers. The Society runs a sales table at most meetings, with plants, seedlings, pots, fertilizers, etc. for sale at very reasonable prices.
